ALICIA BRIDGES

Bridges became a one-hit wonder when the 1978 disco single "I Love the Nightlife," which she co-wrote, reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 U.S. charts and became a worldwide hit. She was a Grammy nominee in 1978 and the opening act at the Grammy awards that year. Bridges was born in Charlotte, N.C., and grew up in the small mill town of Lawndale, north of Shelby. By the age of 12 she had her own radio show “The Alicia Bridges Show” at Shelby’s WADA and played rock and roll guitar and sang. Influenced from an early age by another Lawndale musician, guitarist and band leader Ray Ledford, she fronted rock bands in the 1960s and 70s.
