ARTHUR SMITH

Arthur Smith was a textile mill worker who became a celebrated and respected country music instrumental composer. Smith composed the best-selling banjo instrumental "Dueling Banjos," which won a 1973 Grammy and "Guitar Boogie."

He created, produced and marketed the first country music TV show to be syndicated nationally, The Arthur Smith Show, which ran for 32 years.

In 1957 he created the first recording studio in the Carolinas in Charlotte, N.C., where he has lived since 1943.

His syndicated radio show Top of the Morning was sponsored by Bost Bread of Shelby for 30 years.

Smith was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2010.
