HARRY GOLDEN

Transcript

Harry Golden was born Herschel Goldhirsch in Ukraine, moved to Canada, then to New York City, only to find himself making his real mark in North Carolina. Golden started first as a stockbroker but lost his job in the market crash of 1929. The federal prison in Atlanta was his next home due to a conviction of mail fraud. In 1941 freshly out of prison, he moved to Charlotte, N.C., and wrote for both the Charlotte Labor Journal and the Charlotte Observer.

It was through both these publications that Golden began to make his liberal politics known. He frequently wrote to speak out against Jim Crow laws. From 1942 until 1968 he continued writing while publishing the Carolina Israelite encompassing recollections and anecdotes from his time as a Jewish youth in New York City. He also traveled in 1960 to West Germany to speak to Jews, and to Israel in 1961 to cover the Adolf Eichmann trial for Life magazine. He is well known for his 1958 collection of essays “Only in America.”
