The Out of Carolina Gallery explores Earl’s time in the mills, his early start in music, his journey on the road, and, eventually, the moment he changed music history when he played on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium. This gallery explores the earlier years of Earl Scruggs’ life and career, including his transition from the mills to the stage. In the Land of Radio explores the impact of broadcasting, and guests can listen to ads, news, and music from the 20s, 30s, and 40s when radio stations began broadcasting the music of the area across the South and beyond. It soon became a beacon of American culture and eventually became known as country music.
The Out of Carolina Gallery also features an interactive video station titled “Strings on Screen” that shares three videos that document the impact of Louise Scruggs on the music industry and how Flatt and Scruggs changed the perception of country music in popular culture, their involvement in the legendary film Bonnie and Clyde and the iconic Beverly Hillbillies, and the national impact of The Martha White Show that made Earl Scruggs a household name.
