What do you know about Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Tommy Jarrell, Charlie Poole, Joe Thompson, Rhiannon Giddens and David Holt? Do you know the difference between old-time music and bluegrass? After this talk, you will know more. There will be a focus on the early, North Carolina years of Earl Scruggs. Questions and comments will be encouraged and welcome.
Twenty-two years ago, Elizabeth Carlson moved from Boston to North Carolina. Before long, she became enchanted by the music of her new home state. She soon founded Carolina Music Ways, a nonprofit group that teaches school children about NC’s diverse music history. She created the group’s school show and related classroom lessons. Carlson took two years to write North Carolina String Music Masters: Old-Time and Bluegrass Legends. It’s for 6th grade through adult and is suitable for beginners and experts. The book is being used in classes at UNC Chapel Hill and other universities. Carlson holds a degree in English and American studies from Princeton University and in Language and Literacy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
