Curious about the cultural impact of Native Americans on Cleveland County? For September’s Coffee with the Curator join Earl Scruggs Center Assistant Director Zach Dressel and Dr. Stephen Criswell, Director of Native American Studies at USC-Lancaster, for an examination of the tradition of Catawba Indian Pottery. This Coffee with the Curator is programmed in conjunction with the Language of Clay exhibit currently on display at the Earl Scruggs Center.

 

Dr. Stephen Criswell is the Director of Native American Studies and a Professor of English and Folklore at the University of South Carolina Lancaster.  He is a native of Gaston County, NC, and earned his B.A from Belmont Abbey College, his M.A. from UNC Charlotte, and his Ph.D. from the University of Louisiana.  His research interests include Indigenous traditional art, foodways–particularly Carolina fish camps—traditional music, and local legends.  His work has been featured in such outlets as WTVI, The Washington Post, The South Carolina Encyclopedia, SCETV, The Bitter Southerner, and The Charlotte Observer.  Dr. Criswell is a recipient of the South Carolina Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award, presented annually by the South Carolina Legislature for Folk Culture Advocacy.
