Sacred Sounds of Western North Carolina: A Shaped Note Singing Workshop with Laura Boosinger

November 9 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Shaped Note singing is a sacred music tradition that traces its roots back to the 19th century when congregations that did not have access to pianos and organs sang acapella with the aid of specialized hymn books that used shapes instead of traditional notation in order to be more accessible to those who could not read music.  Today this form of singing is still in use and many gatherings are held throughout the country, bringing singers from far and wide together to perform in the vocal style that has been used for generations.

Shaped Note singing is a fun exploration of history and song, and renowned musician Laura Boosinger is an expert in the craft having taught many workshops featuring pieces of music from The Christian Harmony, first published in 1866.  The Earl Scruggs Center is proud to partner with Laura to offer a workshop that will be inclusive to all experience levels from beginner to advanced.  Learn the history of this fantastic music and take home the experience of creating music in a unique and exciting way.

The program will begin at 11am in the Great Hall of the Earl Scruggs Center.  All necessary materials will be provided.  Tickets for Earl Scruggs Center Members are $5 and for Non-members $10.  If you are part of a choral group call and ask about discounted rates.
